The charm of Verena Sieber-Fuchs' jewellery works immediately. Materials diverted, magnified by the brutal treatment she sometimes causes them to undergo: paper or onion peels, confetti or medicine capsules are cut, torn, pierced, burned and then crossed by a very fine wire that she patiently crochets. This alchemist who transmutes matter does not do so for aesthetic reasons alone. On the contrary, each work conceals in an underlying way, but revealed by its title, the artist's concerns or commitments.
Here, she tore up a map of Switzerland which she then reconstructed into a necklace, playing on the shades of blue and green. An unpublished cartography of our country.
Verena Sieber-Fuchs, born in Appenzell in 1943, trained as a textile designer at the Kunstgewerbeschule Basel and Zurich. She lives and works in Zurich.
